V&M was started in 2011 by Mauritz and Elria Wentzel together with Volker Schillack. Although also an analytical chemist, Elria was assigned financial duties leaving Mauritz and Volker to set about creating a viable contract laboratory with a large enough client base to sustain a business. Both were experienced analytical chemists, with a passion for chromatography and mass spectrometry. Within a relatively short time clients in the food and agricultural sectors were able to have tests done in George and V&M was off the ground.
The original lab was in the Oorskooitjie building in York Street. In 2014, a property was purchased in Victoria Street and a modern, functional laboratory was built for the new V&M Lab. From the outset it was realised that certain regulatory requirements would have to be met to demonstrate proficiency and access different markets. To this end, V&M attained ISO 17025 accreditation through SANAS in 2014 and SAHPRA accreditation in 2020.
In recent years V&M has expanded, offering a wide range of tests to a diverse set of clients. The staff compliment has increased steadily with a vibrant set of young graduates and specialist support staff added to the fold.
